The American Association of Orthodontists recommends a first orthodontic exam by age 7. In some cases, correcting dental problems while a child is young may prevent more serious problems from developing and make subsequent treatment shorter and more predictable.
In the majority of cases, the ideal time to begin orthodontic treatment is when the patient is actively growing, usually in the early adolescent years. This is when the jaws are developing most rapidly.
In certain cases, orthodontic problems can be corrected more efficiently at a younger age (7-10 years). Such treatment may reduce the severity of a problem and minimize the need for more extensive/invasive treatment plans in future, such as extractions and jaw surgery.
Since each patient’s needs are unique, the length and type of treatment can only be determined after a complete orthodontic evaluation.
Today, more than 20% of orthodontic patients are over 18 years of age. Crooked teeth, improper bite, crowding, and protrusion can now be corrected in adults regardless of age. The latest dental technology has made orthodontic treatment easier and less intrusive through new bonding techniques and smaller appliances.
